Doug
has been playing mandolin for 20 years and is now a fixture in
Richmond, Va, supporting various musicians and musical ensembles
around the town. He learned guitar, mandolin, percussion, and
music theory as a student of Tom Espinola and developed his
improvisational style from listening and jamming with the mandolin to a
wide variety of musical styles. His earliest inspiration came
from J S Darling, the organist and choir master of the Bruton Parish
Boys Choir of which he was a member for several years. Doug has been a member of a number of well known groups over the years: in a trio with Tom Espinola and Lorraine Duisit, with Virginia Rail, a Richmond based bluegrass band and as a founding member of acoustic jamband Soy Hero. He has also recorded with Virginia Rail and Soy Hero. Doug uses two mandolins with the RSB. One is Collings A-model. The other is a rare Wildwood mandolin, made in 1981 by Wildwood Banjo Co. On their small farm in King and Queen County, Doug raises organic vegetables, chickens, goats, and two boys with his wife, Lesley. |
