Dave's
life of music is the age-old story of a New Hampshire boy soprano
turned banjo player turned barbershop quartet singer, who graduates
from West Point to join the Army seeking German beer, gets
married to a beautiful soprano, has three amazing children, and finally
settles in Virginia, to make neither fame nor fortune as a NASA
engineer.
Dave has owned a great many banjos in his life, both of them being
Gibsons given to him by his father. His first was an RB-100 with
no tone ring but a lovely mellow sound; his current banjo is a 1972
Mastertone RB-250.
The following recipe, if followed precisely in low humidity, produces
Dave's playing style:
-
Start with a generous helping of Earl Scruggs Instructional Book and Tape
-
Add 1 cup each of Ben Eldridge and Larry McNeely
-
Add a 4-hour lesson with Bill Emerson
-
Sprinkle lightly with Harold Streeter, Alan Munde, Tony Trishka, and Peter Wernick
-
Add a dash of Chet Atkins, Jimmy Goodreau and Mike Auldridge, for smoothness
-
Mix thoroughly with Bela Fleck and Alison Brown, and serve up hot.
-
Good for parties and special occasions.
