bluegrass, old-time & swing music

Barry with guitar Barry began playing old-time music while at the College of William and Mary, joining the Friends of Appalachian Music (FoAM) there in 1981. With FoAM, Barry helped to start a dance series that is now entering its 20th year. Following graduation, Barry began playing music full-time for the
Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, performing in the CW taverns and in a variety of concert settings.  He started out playing guitar, and progressed to banjo, and finally moved up the evolutionary scale to mandolin. During this time, Barry studied guitar with Tom Espinola, who
remains a major influence on his playing.

Barry is a founding member of the noted early music trio, the Virginia Company, where he plays mandolin and flutes, and has recorded three CDs with that ensemble. The Virginia Company has performed throughout the eastern US, including shows at Wolf Trap, the Kennedy Center, and the National Geographic Society.

The Runaway String Band has allowed Barry the opportunity to get back to playing guitar, and to playing old-time and early swing music. He plays a 1957 Martin 000-21 guitar and a 2005 Rigel RG-100 mandolin with the RSB.
